I am a self taught artist and freelance graphic designer based in Mumbai, India. I grew up in Pune, in a house full of people, pets and a garden with every shade of green. Art was and is my quiet space. Music, spiritual philosophy and plant life have played a large part in shaping my aesthetics. I tried my hand at Glazed Ceramics, Charcoal Drawing, Oil Painting and Calligraphy... until I saw a watercolour plein air demo. I recall being mesmerized by the unique spontaneity with which the artist worked the medium.
Watercolor, unlike other mediums, I learnt after much trial and error, is unforgiving once you commit your brush to paper. To paint with watercolor is to paint with clarity, with resolve and yet be prepared to lose control, to ‘go with the flow’ and let the medium weave its magic into your artwork. More than a decade after that plein air demo, a marriage, a baby, an ongoing freelance graphic design practice and many stuttered attempts at watercolor later, I've made friends with the medium. The aim is to be able to draw a straight and clear line from my life to my art.
Medium Of Expression
Watercolor on paper, occasionally combined with pen and ink
Joseph Raffael's large-scale watercolors, Henri Rousseau’s jungle scenes, Josep Zbukvic's atmospheric paintings and keen eye for color as a tool for perspective, Yuko Nagayama’s exquisite watercolors with lost and found edges, Sarah Simblet’s botanical drawings, Maurice Sendak's illustration and the Bundi style of Rajasthani pantings to name a few.
